THE YELLOW HOUSE

I WATCHED A DOCUMENTARY/FILM ABOUT THE YEAR THAT VAN GOGH AND GAUGUIN LIVED TOGETHER IN 'THE YELLOW HOUSE' IN SELF IMPOSED EXCILE. WHILST THERE THEY PAINTED OVER FORTY OF THEIR GREATEST WORKS BUT AT THE SAME TIME DROVE EACH OTHER MAD (VAN GOGH CHOPPED HIS EAR OFF IN THE HOUSE AND COMMITTED SUICIDE 18 MONTHS LATER).





THESE ARE SOME OF VAN GOGHS PAINTINGS FROM THE TIME...I THINK IT IS INTERESTING HOW SIMILAR ALOT OF THE COLOURS ARE TO THE PAINTINGS FROM THE MUSEUM OF EVERYTHING. THEY ALSO HAVE QUITE A FREE AND EXPRESSIVE FEEL ABOUT THE WAY THE PAINT IS APPLIED TO THE CANVAS.

BILL TRAYLOR (1854 - 1949)

BILL TRAYLOR'S WORK IS SOME OF THE MOST EXCITING AND INTERESTING WORK I HAVE EVER SEEN. I LOVE HIS USE OF COLOUR AND LINE AND THE WAY HE CAPTURES THE ESSENCE OF PEOPLE OR ANIMALS BUT IN THE SIMPLEST AND MOST ECONOMICAL WAY. HE WAS BORN INTO SLAVERY AND LATER MOVED TO MONTGOMERY WHERE HE WOULD SIT ON THE PAVEMENT AND DRAW THE PEOPLE WALKING PAST. HIS WORKS INCLUDE A MIXTURE OF HIS MEMORIES OF FARM LIFE AND OF THE PEOPLE HE SAW LATER.
THE PICTURES BELOW SHOW THE DIVERSITY OF HIS WORK BUT SHOW NOTHING OF THE BREDTH OF WHAT HE ACHIEVED. I AM SO PLEASED THAT I HAVE DISCOVERED HIS WORK...













WILLIAM HAWKINS (1895 - 1990)

LIKE MCCARTHY (BELOW), HAWKINS PAINTINGS ARE BRIGHT AND BOLD WITH AN AMAZING USE OF COLOUR AND SENSE OF SCALE AND SPACE. IT IS THE LATTER THAT INTERESTS ME MOST ABOUT HAWKINS WORK - AS HE IS NOT ALLOWED TO LET THEIR BE SPACE AROUND HIS WORK. HE WAS OF MIXED HERITAGE, BEING BOTH WHITE, BLACK AND AMERICAN INDIAN AND SAID THAT ALL OF THESE INFLUENCES HAD AN EFFECT ON THE WAY HE PAINTED AND THE SUBJECT MATTER. I LOVE THESE PAINTINGS AS MUCH AS MCCARTHY'S BECAUSE THERE IS A REAL SENSE OF FREEDOM ABOUT HOW THE ARTISTS PAINT AND USE THE CANVAS IN NEW WAYS. THE USE OF BORDERS AND WRITING ON THE WORK IS A TECHNIQUE USED BY MANY OUTSIDER ARTISTS AND REALLY WORK IN THIS CONTEXT...






JUSTIN MCCARTHY (1892 - 1977)

ONE OF THE PIECES OF WORK SHOWN AT THE MUSEUM OF EVERYTHING IS NOT ONLINE, BUT IT WAS THAT PICTURE WHICH REALY DREW ME TO HIS WORK. IT WAS A PAINTING OF TWO BOXERS FIGHTING AND THE BACKGROUND WAS TWO BOLD BLOCKS OF ORANGE AND YELLOW. THE PAINTERS SORT OF MERGED INTO ONE FIGURE AND THE LINES TO SHOW THE EDGES OF THE RING WHERE THERE JUST ENOUGH TO GIVE CONTEXT.
HE HAD A DIFFICULT START TO LIFE AND SPENT TIME IN A MENTAL INSTITUTION BEFORE WHERE HE BEGAN TO PAINT. HIS WORK IS BEAUTIFUL AND I FIND HIS USE OF CHARACTER AND COLOUR AMAZING. HIS WORKS WERE QUITE BIG (THERE WERE ALSO SOME OF HIS ICE SKATERS PAINTINGS IN THE SHOW) BUT WERE FULL OF EXPRESSION WITHOUT BEING OVERLY WORKED...









HARALD STOFFERS (1969- )

HARALD STOFFERS WORK IS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO ME BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN COLLECTING THE A-Z'S OF PEOPLES PERSONAL UNIVERSES AND NOW HAVE PILES OF WORDS TO WORK WITH.
HE DRAWS IS OWN LINES FREE-HAND AND THEN WRITES ABOUT EXACTY WHAT HE IS GOING TO DO THE NEXT DAY, DOWN TO WHAT TROUSERS HE WILL WEAR AND HOW MUCH MONEY HE WILL NEED TO BUY A COFFEE AT THE TRAIN STATION. HE VISITS AN EMPLOYMENT AND REHABILITATION CENTRE FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES EVERYDAY, BUT MUCH OF HIS TIME IS TAKEN UP WTIH WRITING. THEY TAKE THE FORM OF LETTERS BUT ARE RARELY SENT.

THIS ORGANISING OF VAST AMOUNTS OF IDEAS WITHIN A SET OF GUIDELINES IS EXACTLY WHAT I SET MYSELF TO DO WITH THE A-Z PROJECT. USING THE A-Z AS A FRAMEWORK, PEOPLE FELT ABLE TO REALLY OPEN UP AND GIVE QUITE PERSONAL DETAILS OF THEIR LIVES ,PROBABLY FAR MORE THAN THEY WOULD HAVE DONE UNDER OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES. THE IDEA OF RULES TO INVOKE CREATIVITY IS REALLY INTERESTING AND STOFFERS IS A CLEAR EXAMPLE OF HOW EFFECTIVE THIS CAN BE...
