FONT S

I HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT DIFFERENT TYPES OF FONTS TO MAKE A BANNER OR HEADING FOR MY SHEETS SO THAT IT GIVES THE WHOLE THING AN IDENTITY. I THINK THE MEDIEVAL FONT IS THE BEST, FOR OBVIOUS REASONS BUT ALSO IT IS THE CLEAREST ONE TO READ - ESPECIALLY FOR CHILDREN.

CARRIER PIGEON

CARRIER PIGEONS WERE USED TO SEND AND RECEIVE MESSAGES FROM NEIGHBOURING VILLAGES

QUILL

THIS DIAGRAM SHOWS HOW TO MAKE A QUILL PEN. IT IS THE UGLIEST DRAWING EVER, BUT I THINK IT WOULD BE AN INTERESTING ACTIVITY. IT WOULD BE USED TO TALK ABOUT HOW THE PRIESTS IN THE CASTLE CHURCH WERE THE ONLY LITERATE PEOPLE..

THIS IS A PHOTOGRAPH OF THE INTERIOR OF THE CHURCH AT MOUNTFITCHET CASTLE..THE PAINTINGS ON THE WALL WERE USED TO TELL THE RELIGIOUS STORIES TO THE PEASANTS WHO COULDN'T READ. THE MAN IN THE PICTURE (THE PRIEST) IS WRITING WITH A QUILL

JOIN THE DOTS

I LIKE THE IDEA OF JOIN THE DOTS, AND AM THINKING OF USING IT AS PART OF A SHEILD DESIGN PAGE. I REALLY USED TO LOVE THE FEELING THAT YOU WERE ACTUALLY DRAWING AND ALSO THE INEVITABLE MISTAKE YOU WOULD MAKE THAT WOULD LOOK ODD WHEN YOU ACTUALLY FINISHED THE DRAWING..

MODEL HOUSE

THIS IS THE FLAT TEMPLATE FOR MAKING A MEDIEVAL HOUSE. ALTHOUGH TO BE HONEST WITH YOU, I DON'T THINK THERE WERE THAT MANY TUDOR BEAMS AROUND IN 1066.. STILL IT IS INTERESTING TO SEE HOW IT COULD WORK TO MAKE A 3D MODEL.

THIS IS THE 3D MODEL POST CONSTRUCTION.

SKIPTON CASTLE - ACTIVITIES

SKIPTON CASTLE IN NORTH YORKSHIRE IS ONE OF THE BEST PRESERVED MADIEVAL CASTLES IN ENGLAND. ON THEIR WEBSITE, THEY HAVE AN EXCELLENT RANGE OF ACTIVITIES/PUZZLES FOR VISITING CHILDREN WHICH HAVE GIVEN ME SOME REALLY GOOD IDEAS, THEY INCLUDE:

COLOURING CARDS
COLOUR AND MAKE CARDS
COLOUR AND MAKE FACE MASKS OF LORD & LADY OF THE CASTLE
WORD SEARCH
SPOT THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TWO CASTLE DRAWINGS
MAKE YOUR OWN BADGE FOR VISIT (REALLY LIKE THIS ONE)

STAR WARS COLOURING BOOK

THE STAR WARS BOOK IS QUITE DIFFERENT TO THE OTHERS IN TERMS OF THE ACTUAL LINES, WHICH APPEAR MUCH THICKER. THIS GIVES THESE DRAWINGS A DIFFERENT FEEL TO THE OTHERS, WHICH IS QUITE SURPRISING. THIS IS SOMETHING FOR ME TO REMEMBER, THAT SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS THE THICKNESS OF THE LINE CAN HAVE SUCH AN IMPACT.
I THINK THESE DRAWINGS ARE AMAZING, I LOVE THE DETAIL ON THE LITTLE ALIEN MAN BELOW AND ALSO THE COMPOSITION AND STRANGENESS OF THE HUGE DARTH VADER AT THE BOTTOM.

STAR TREK COLOURING BOOK

THE STAR TREK BOOK HAS THE SIMPLEST DRAWINGS BUT I STILL REALLY LIKE IT AS A REALLY ACCESSIBLE WAY TO EXPLAIN A NARRATIVE. THERE IS ONLY ONE SENTENCE OF TEXT FOR EACH DRAWING, SO IT IS IMPORTANT THAT EACH ONE IS REALLY WELL THOUGHT OUT. I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW THE PROCESS THAT WENT IN TO MAKING ALL OF THESE BOOKS, AS TO WHETHER THEY WERE DRAWN FROM THE FILMS OR TRACED FROM STILLS ? AND OF COURSE THE COVER IS AMAZING.

THE RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK COLOURING BOOK

THE RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK COLOURING BOOK, I THINK, HAS THE BEST DRAWINGS. I JUST LOVE THE COMPOSITION AND THE STYLE-ISED NATURE OF EVERYTHING. AND ONCE AGAIN THE SLIGHTLY OBSCURE OR WEIRD ELEMENTS, SUCH AS THE CRAZED NAZI MONKEY...

PLANETS OF THE APES COLOURING BOOK

I LIKE THESE BECAUSE THEY CAPTURE THE WEIRDNESS IF THE PLANET OF THE APES FLIM. THE COLOURED IN ONE SHOWS WHAT IT WOULD LOOK LIKE ONCE IT HAD BEEN USED.

DUNE COLOURING BOOK

I HAVE DISCOVERED THESE AMAZING COLOURING BOOKS FROM THE SEVENTIES. I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS FROM THE COVER TO THE DRAWINGS INSIDE. THE DRAWINGS ARE BRILLIANT AND VARY QUITE ALOT. THIS ALSO TELLS A STORY AT THE SAME TIME, WHICH I HAVE NEVER SEEN WITH A COLOURING BOOK BEFORE.

COLOURING BOOK

ONE ACTIVITY TO THINK ABOUT IS COLOURING IN. I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED COLOURING IN BOOKS BEFORE THERE IS COLOUR ON THEM, AND PERHAPS THEY HAVE HAD AN IMPACT ON THE WAY I DRAW AS I OFTEN PREFER TO JUST HAVE A LINE DRAWING WITH ALOT OF WHITE SPACE AROUND IT.
I THOUGHT THESE TWO WERE INTERESTING FOR TWO DIFFERENT REASONS. THE FIRST ONE (DIRECTLY BELOW) IS REALLY GREAT COMPOSITIONALLY. THE WAY THAT ALL THE SHAPES MERGE INTO ONE MASS.
AND THE SECOND ONE IS A REALLY INTERESTING SUBJECT MATTER AND IS A GOOD REFERENCE FOR ME ONCE AGAIN ABOUT HOW TO MAKE, SOMETIMES QUITE OBSCURE, INFORMATION ACCESSIBLE AND INTERESTING.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

THIS IS A WEBSITE WHICH JUST REALLY SIMPLY BREAKS DOWN DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF CASTLE LIVING IN TO EASY/QUICK BIT TO READ

http://www.castles.me.uk/life-in-a-motte-and-bailey-castle.htm

ALSO, I THINK IT IS QUITE A GOOD EXAMPLE OF HOW BORING THESE THINGS CAN LOOK BUT HOW INTERESTING THE CONTENT IS.

SIMPLE BOOK BINDING

THIS PROJECT (PROJECT 2) IS ALL ABOUT THE IDEA OF CHILDREN/ADULTS MAKING THEIR OWN BOOK OUT OF THE PAGES THEY CHOOSE. THIS MEANS THAT I AM GOING TO HAVE TO FIND A REALLY SIMPLE BUT EFFECTIVE AND FOOL PROOF WAY OF BINDING A BOOK OF AN INDEFINITE NUMBER OF PAGES.
THIS IS ACTUALLY QUITE GOOD FOR ME, BECAUSE IN THE A-Z PROJECT I FOUND IT DIFFICULT TO THINK OF A WAY TO BIND MY BOOKS. I WILL TRY A VARIETY OF METHODS TO SEE WHICH ONE IS THE MOST APPROPRIATE.

METHOD ONE:
THIS IS FROM INSTRUCTABLES.COM WHICH IS AN AMERICAN WEBSITE THAT TELLS YOU HOW TO MAKE STUFF.
THEY SUGGEST MAKING THE HOLES WITH A DRILL (!) BUT YOU CAN USE A HAMMER AND NAILS. THIS METHOD IT POSSIBLE, BUT IT REQUIRES THE BINDING TO OCCUR DOWN A CENTRAL SPINE - WHICH MINE OBVIOUSLY WON'T HAVE..

METHOD TWO:
I SAW THIS DIAGRAM, AS WELL AS THINKING ABOUT THE ABOVE IDEA, AND IT MAKES SENSE TO HAVE THE PAGES ALREADY PRE-HOLE PUNCHED. THAT WAY PEOPLE WOULD NOT FEEL DISCOURAGED ABOUT HAVING TO FAFF AROUND WITH DRILLS AND HAMMERS.

FOLLOWING ON FROM THIS IDEA, YOU CAN GET INDIVIDUAL RING BINDER RINGS, SO THERE COULD BE 2/3/4 OF THEM INCLUDED IN THE SET DEPENDING ON THE NUMBERS OF HOLES IN THE PAGES. THIS WOULD BE A SIMPLE SOLUTION.

THEY COME IN A VARIETY OF DIAMETERS:

20MM
25MM
38MM
50MM
64MM
AND SLIGHT DIFFERENCES IN FUNCTIONS.

METHOD THREE:
ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE IS TO USE BOOK BINDING SCREWS. I WOULD STILL MAKE THE HOLES IN THE BOOK AS BEFORE, BUT THE SCREWS WOULD MAKE THE BOOK LESS LOOSE AND MORE BOOKISH IN A WAY.

METHOD FOUR:
USING EITHER OF THESE TECHNIQUES, THERE IS ALSO THE POSSIBILITY OF JUST MAKING ONE HOLE IN A CORNER.
